How we do it: Plank on Ply
The process is (as shown in the diagram to the right):
- The 12mm plywood is glued and T-Nailed to the concrete.
- Then the timber is glued and pinned to the plywood.
The Benefits of the plank on ply system
- Plywood is a better sub straight to fix the timber to.
- The timber can be square dressed (no tongue and grove) which means you get the entire thickness for sanding life.
- The timber is pinned at every 400mm which results in a better fixing.

- Plywood is leveled and fixed to the front of the step.
- Leveling compound is poured on the step to create a flat surface.
- Plywood is fixed to the top of the step.
- Timber veneer is fixed to the front of the step.
- A nosing and timber is fixed to the top of the step.
